New Students
Students accepted to study at the University of Tasmania will need to apply for a student visa at the nearest Australian Embassy, Diplomatic Mission, Consulate or High Commission.
All international students wishing to study in Australia must obtain a valid student visa. The visa application requirements and processing time can be lengthy, taking anywhere from a few weeks up to several months. It is very important that you contact the nearest Australian Embassy, Diplomatic Mission, Consulate or High Commission for information as early as possible in the application process.
When the payment to accept your offer is received, the University will issue a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) document, which will enable you to apply for a student visa.
Visa applications are assessed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) according to the assessment level of individual applicants. The passport you hold and the education sector of your principal academic program determines your Assessment Level.
For more information on student visas please consult:
- your International Representative (agent), if you are applying through an official International Representative of the University
- your nearest Australian Embassy, Diplomatic Mission, Consulate or High Commission
- the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC)
Student visas and temporary entry permits usually last for the length of the course. Students wishing to extend their visa should first contact International Office for assistance and advice.
One of the conditions of your visa is that you must leave Australia upon the completion of your course. After completing your course, if you wish to undertake further study you must first go to the nearest office of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship before your current temporary entry permit expires. Allow yourself several weeks before the date that your visa expires.
The University is obliged to report any student who does not attend classes, or who is not making satisfactory progress in their studies, to the Australian government. Such a student may be asked to leave the country.
Your student visa also requires you to remain in full-time study, and to notify the University of any change in contact details (residential address in Australia and telephone number).
