How do I make an appointment?

To make an appointment for a consultation in Hobart, send an email to EnglishAssist.Hobart@utas.edu.au. Please include your full name and UTAS student ID number, and let us know the days and times you are free. We will email back with your time.

Consultations are in our office: Room 321 in the Old Medical Science Building in College Road.

How many consultations can I have?

Consultations are generally available Monday - Friday, including during semester breaks, and they usually run for fifty minutes. There is a limit of one consultation per student per week. We sometimes get very busy, so it's a good idea to book early. However, during busy times we cannot guarantee a consultation will be available.

What can I work on in a consultation?

You can use an EnglishAssist consultation to work on any language-related aspect of your university life. The purpose of a consultation is to develop your independent language skills. EnglishAssist staff will look at your work and make suggestions for improvement, but we do not correct your work for you.

What should you bring to an EnglishAssist consultation?
  • Your unit outline for the course or assignment you need help with
  • A pen and paper to take notes
  • If you want help with a written assignement, bring a printed, double-spaced draft, or your essay plan or notes
What happens at an EnglishAssist consultation?
  • Explain what you'd like help with
  • Work with EnglishAssist staff to identify problems, and learn and practice skills to address these
  • Review what you have learnt
Will EnglishAssist read my whole assignment?
  • It depends on the length. Generally you will be expected to use the advice given during the consultation to edit the rest of the assignment yourself.
  • If you are a postgraduate student, contact EnglishAssist early in your degree to arrange a program of assistance.
Does EnglishAssist provide IELTS support?

Unfortunately we cannot provide assistance with preparation for the IELTS test. There are IELTS practice materials available in the UTAS library.
