The world's best kept secret
Imagine a stunningly beautiful island of majestic mountains, lush temperate rainforests, wild river rapids, rolling forested hills and white sandy surf beaches. Where else can you find all this in less than an hour's drive from the city in any direction? Add to that natural environment two vibrant cities with a wide range of cages, restaurants, pubs, theatres, cinemas, shopping centres and open-air markets and you've got the best of both worlds all in one place.
A Destination Like No Other
The University of Tasmania is a popular destination for students who are seeking a unique experience where the population and friendly atmosphere create an environment in which they can easily immerse themselves in the culture and make friends with the locals. It seems that nearly every time you walk into a coffee shop or cafe, someone will ask you where you're from and how you came to Tasmania. Visitors to "Tassie" (as locals like to refer to their island state) are not just tourists; they are very special guests who are welcomed with open arms.
You've Got Choices
UTAS offers Study Abroad and Exchange students a choice between Hobart and Launceston. Travel time between the two campuses is approximately 2.5 hours by car, and each campus has it's own distinct characteristics.
Hobart
Hobart is the capital and largest city in Tasmania, yet it is free from overcrowding, traffic congestion, serious pollution and major crime. Situated close to the mouth of the Derwent River and nestled in the foothills of Mount Wellington, it seems that nearly every home, office and classroom has a magnificent view. In Hobart you are always meeting someone new, yet frequently bump into someone you know.
The University's Hobart campus is set in the suburbs of Sandy Bay within walking distance to the city centre. Much of the upper campus is in natural bushland. Closer to the city centre are the Clinical School, the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, and the prestigious School of Art. The School of Fine Arts is housed in a renovated jam factory overlooking the harbour and takes full advantage of its historic location and spectacular setting.
Around 11,000 students are enrolled at the Hobart campus. The academic strengths of the Hobart campus include Aboriginal Studies, Antarctic Studies, Fine Arts, Geography & Environmental Studies, Law, Journalism, Media and Communications and Zoology.
Launceston
Launceston is the major city in the north of the state nestled amongst rolling hills and vineyards and is conveniently located close to popular wilderness areas such as Cradle Mountain and the Asbestos Ranges National Park. The Gorge in Launceston is also a popular place for students to explore with its walking trails and swimming holes.
For students who are seeking a smaller campus (about 4,000 students) with more personalised classes, Launceston is the place to be. Study Abroad students report that the low number of Americans on this campus is an asset. They find themselves surrounded by more Australian friends than any other American students they know.
Academically the Launceston campus is set apart with the following: Aquaculture, Architecture, Education, Nursing and Performing Arts.
Accessibility to the 'Mainland'
Tasmania is an island separated from the other states of Australia by Bass Strait. Flights operate daily out of both Hobart and Launceston to Melbourne (55 minutes) and Sydney (1 1/2 hours) if you wish to get away for the weekend. Boomerang passes which allow you inexpensive one-way flight coupons are available at most travel agents in the USA. These coupons allow you to city-hop across the mainland or visit Ayers Rock or the Great Barrier reef during your break. Contact your travel agent for details as these coupons must be purchased prior to arrival in Australia.
Two large ferries operate between the north coast of Tasmania and Melbourne.
