Study Abroad & Exchange to Tasmania

Frequently Asked Questions

I want to come to UTAS on exchange. Where do I start?

Firstly you need to check that your home university has a formal exchange agreement with UTAS – you will find a list of our formal Partner Institutions on our website.

If UTAS does have a formal exchange agreement with your home university, you need to speak with your university’s student exchange coordinator. They will advise you on what steps you need to take to apply for a formal exchange.

If your university is not listed as a formal Partner Institution then you can apply to come to UTAS as a Study Abroad student. Please the Study Abroad and Exchange Coordinator for more information.

What’s the difference between Study Abroad and Exchange?
  • Exchange: To apply to be an Exchange Student at UTAS you must be a currently enrolled student at one of our formal Partner Institutions. As an Exchange Student you remain enrolled at your home university and you will pay your tuition fees to them and not to UTAS.
  • Study Abroad: If you are a student at a university that is not one of our formal Partner Institutions then you are a classed as a Study Abroad student. This means that you will be required to pay tuition fees to UTAS to accept a place as a Study Abroad student.
Are there any scholarships available for Study Abroad and Exchange students?

Study Abroad students may be awarded a scholarship of AUD$1,000. Scholarship eligibility is based on academic merit and a personal statement (maximum 500 words) explaining why you wish to study at UTAS. This personal statement should be included with your application form and supporting documentation.

Please Note: These scholarships will only be available for 2012. They will no longer be offered from 2013.

What if I don’t want to accept an offer of enrolment made to me by UTAS?

If you don’t want to accept an offer to undertake a Study Abroad or Exchange experience with UTAS, please write an email to student.mobility@utas.edu.au advising that you are not intending to accept your offer of a place.

Can I work while I’m on exchange?

All students studying with UTAS who have a student visa are entitled to work a maximum of twenty hours per week during formal teaching periods and full-time during semester breaks.

What’s the weather like in Tasmania?

The warmest months in Tasmania are December to March and the average maximum summer temperature is between 17 and 23 degrees Celsius (62 and 73 degrees Fahrenheit respectively). The coldest months are May to August, with the average maximum winter temperature between 3 and 11 degrees Celsius (37 and 51 degrees Fahrenheit respectively).

What kind of accommodation is available at UTAS?

Housing is not guaranteed at UTAS and is arranged on a “first in, best served” basis. There are residential colleges, share houses, University apartments and private houses.

I’ve started studying with UTAS but I don’t like the units I’m enrolled in - can I change my subjects?

You are able to change the units you are undertaking as long as you do this before the census date for the semester you are enrolled in. After the census date, you are unable to enrol in any new units and withdrawing from a unit will result in a Fail on your Academic Transcript for that unit.

If you do change units prior to census date, it is your responsibility to talk to your home university about seeking credit for any new units you enrol in.

How many units should I do a semester?

The standard load for Study Abroad and Exchange students at UTAS is 4 units per semester but the conditions of a Student Visa allow you to enrol in a reduced load of 3 units (minimum) if you would prefer not to enrol in 4 units.

How do I change my enrolment once the semester has started?

If you want to change your enrolment you can log in to the eStudentCentre on the Current Students UTAS webpage. You can vary your enrolment by withdrawing from or adding new units (please remember four units is the maximum number of units you can enrol in). Relevant Schools will then review your variation and approve or veto the changes before census date. Please remember to contact your home university to ensure that your proposed enrolment changes will be approved by them.

I’ve decided I want to stay another semester. Am I allowed to?

If you have completed one semester of study at UTAS and have decided you would like to extend your time to enrol in another semester, please contact the Study Abroad and Exchange Coordinator. If you have already completed two semesters you are unable to extend your time at UTAS.
