UTAS Courses and Study Load
As a Study Abroad or exchange student studying for 1 or 2 semesters you are required to study a full load (100%) at the University of Tasmania each semester. 4 units at 12.5% each semester are considered a full time load (12.5% is equivalent to 7.5 ECTS). Within each semester the required attendance at lectures and tutorials (called “contact hours”) can be 12 hours a week. Each unit will have a description of total contact hours, assessments, unit outline and learning outcome and prerequisites. A minimum full time load is 75% or 3 units and this is acceptable for students on a student visa but needs to be approved by your home institution.
All courses in the Undergraduate Programme, except for Medicine and Pharmacy, are open to Exchange students. Students wishing to undertake units in a Masters Degree by Coursework must seek approval from their home institution first and must be approved by UTAS. Not all Masters Degree units are open to Exchange and Study Abroad students.
Please check the Description for each course and unit. Remember to check which units have prerequisites and whether you have completed an equivalent to this prerequisite at your home institution.
When choosing subjects make sure you choose the right campus – ‘H’ (Hobart) and ‘L’ (Launceston). The campuses are 3 hours by car from each other so you will not be able to attend sessions at both campuses.
Undergraduate Programme.
Year 1 = level 100
Year 2 = level 200
Year 3 = level 300
Exams and Assessment
Exams
Some units may not have an end of semester examination. Instead, you will be assessed throughout the semester on your presentations, oral examinations, assignments, projects, field trips etc. However, if you are required to undertake a written examination during examination period you will need to refer to your personal exam timetable. Please refer to the website for further clarification about examinations.
Assessment
Assessment at UTAS is based on 100% scale as follows:
PP Pass grade (50-59%)
CR Credit Pass with Credit (60-69%)
DN Distinction Pass with Distinction (70-79%)
HD High Distinction Pass with High Distinction (80-100%)
UP Ungraded Pass. Pass awarded where the student can only pass or fail
NN Failure (0-49%)
NS* Failure, supplementary exam granted. An NS is awarded where exceptional circumstances are demonstrated, and where the mark is less than 45%
TP* Terminating Pass. Pass grade, but the unit is not permitted to be used as a pre-requisite. The mark range for a TP is 45-49%, where the student has passed the examination component but not the continuous assessment component. TP’s may only be counted to a maximum of 37.5% towards a 300% course, or equivalent for courses of differing duration.
Transcripts
After completing your period of study at the University of Tasmania please arrange for a transcript of your academic record to be sent to you.
