This program is designed for graduates of a Bachelor of Laws or combined Law degree. This Professional Legal Training Program (PLTP) adopts and teaches the National Pre-Admissions Competency Standards as accepted by the Tasmanian Board of Legal Education.
All core units and additional modules are compulsory and are aimed at ensuring trainees obtain the appropriate skills for the practice and procedure necessary as new legal practitioners.
Successful completion of the UTAS Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is a normal prerequisite for admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania.
Minimum entry requirements
- Australian Bachelor of Laws* or combined degree which includes the Bachelor of Laws* (or equivalent)
- Applicants need to have passed the requirements of the subjects prescribed by the Board of Legal Education pursuant to Section 25 of the Legal Profession Act 2007 (Tas). [see LEGAL PROFESSION (BOARD OF LEGAL EDUCATION) RULES 2010 (S.R. 2010, NO. 55)]

Meeting minimum academic entry requirements does not guarantee entry into the program.
English Language Requirements
- IELTS (Academic) overall 6.0 (no band less than 6.0), within the last 24 months; or
- TOEFL (PBT) 575 TWE 4.5, within the last 24 months; or
- TOEFL (iBT) 88 (no score below 20), within the last 24 months; or
- PTE Academic 50 with no score lower than 50, within the last 24 months; or
- Evidence that a minimum of 2 years full-time study with English as the sole medium of instruction and examination have been completed within the last 24 months.
Other Requirements
- UTAS does not require applicants to sit an exam or interview. Assessments are based on academic results and are conducted by staff of International Admissions and the Faculty of Law.
Application and Offer Deadlines
- All applications for the 2013 intake must be received by the 31st October 2012.
- No offers will be made until mid November 2012.
- Offers of Enrolment made at that time are valid for 4 weeks from the date of issue and are for commencement in January 2013 only.
