University of Tromsø – the northernmost university in the world – was established in 1968 to meet uncovered higher education and research needs in Northern Norway, especially in the medicine and health area. Today it is a full university with all the classical faculties: Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Law. Prioritized fields of research are mainly related to the arctic and sub arctic regions: Northern Light and space research, fisheries and marine sciences, biotechnology, telemedicine and community medicine, indigenous studies, theoretical linguistics, among others. 

Although a small institution by global standards, the University of Tromsø is a large institution in the circumpolar world, with approximately 9000 students. The university offers around 300 programs at Bachelor and Master level included professional training in areas such as teaching, pilot training, nursing, music, engineering etc. PhD programs are offered at all the faculties.

In addition, the University of Tromsø houses the University Museum (Tromsø Museum was established in 1872), a University Library, the Centre of Sami Studies as well as two Centres of Excellence, one in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL) and one in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry. As of 2007 three of Norway’s fourteen Centres of Research-based Innovation are located in or connected with the University of Tromsø:  one in telemedicine, TTL, one in ICT (led from Trondheim), and one in marine resource management, MabCent.

University of Tromsø is an international university with students of 84 nationalities on campus. One third of the faculty staff are non-Norwegians. 22 master’s degree programs are taught in English and numerous English taught courses at bachelor and masters level are offered.
