Sugiyama Jogakuen University (SJU) evolved from humble beginnings just over 100 years ago in Nagoya City. Our founder, Masakazu Sugiyama, labored to achieve his aim of providing a high standard of education specifically for girls and young women.

The core of Sugiyama’s education is based upon the founder’s motto: “To Grow.” The term suggests many positive connotations such as to expand, to flourish and to progress. With this dictum as our guide, we aim to cultivate the human resources suited to the demands of future society. Currently, we educate 8,000 students in our kindergarten, primary school, high school and university.

At the university we focus on providing a high quality education. Since our inception, we have continued to use the motto "To Grow" as our educational philosophy. Students can study a wide range of courses including nutrition, environment, languages, communication, information technology, management, education, and nursing in order to benefit themselves and the global community.

CIEP(Center for International Exchange Programs ) coordinates all international exchange programs, including the following activities:

  1. Regular study times provided by SJU student volunteers.
  2. An overnight study tour to historic Kyoto and Nara.
  3. Enjoyable hands-on cultural experiences such as making pottery, designing a Japanese fan, dying cloth Yuzen-style, dressing up in genuine Noh costumes, attending tea ceremony, etc.
  4. Overnight stays with a Japanese family.
  5. Experiencing intern programs at Japanese companies.
