Student Experience

Stephen with friends - Masarykova Univerzita Czech RepublicBack in July 2010 I was apprehensive about jetting off over to the other side of the world by myself to the Czech Republic to undertake an exchange at Masarykova Univerzita (Masaryk University). Especially being intimidated by a country with an incomprehensible language!

These initial hesitations were long gone by the time I commenced studying. Living in a communist era dormitory with a few hundred other international students was the greatest experience with many parties and dinners held on the various floors. I made many life-long friends over here from places like Kosovo, Poland, France, Lithuania, Canada, Croatia and Bosnia, just to name a few. The Masaryk University International Student Club was a well-run organisation running parties, events in Brno and weekend trips. I also had the opportunity to run a weekly English conversation class in which I had students from around 10 countries.
Situated in the South Moravian region, Brno is the Czech Republic’s second largest city of around 400 000 inhabitants, with around twenty per cent students and hosts state institutions like the Czech Constitutional Court and the Supreme Courts. It also hosts one of the largest exhibitions centres in Central Europe and home to over four universities.

Also being located in the heart of Europe it is a stone throws away from the cities of Prague, Vienna, Krakow (Poland) and Budapest, making them great for entertaining weekend trips to marvel at the architecture, history and dazzling nightlife. For the more adventurous the Alps in Austria and the Tatras Mountains in Slovakia is only several hours away for hiking and skiing opportunities.

University is not just about attending lectures, it’s about embracing the opportunities available. Doing a university exchange has been the highlight of my degree and I highly recommend anyone seeking a challenge to do it.
