Accommodation - Homestay

The English Language Centre provides a quality Homestay program. Homestay accommodation provides a safe, caring environment with an Australian host. For English language students this is a great way to experience the Australian way of life and students can benefit from practising English skills with Homestay hosts.

Apply to become a Homestay Host.

What to expect in Homestay?

Due to Australia’s multicultural society, your Homestay host/s may not be of Anglo-Celtic descent and may not have a ‘traditional’ family structure with a mother, father and two children.  Families in Australia are very varied - some will have only one host parent, some will have host parents from another cultural background, and most of the time, the mother will go outside the family home and work during the daytime. A household may also include other students.

In Homestay accommodation, students have their own bedroom and share the family bathroom. Students are treated as a member of the family and should keep their bedroom tidy and be helpful around the house. The Homestay host prepares the evening meals and provides the student with ingredients to make breakfast and lunch themselves.

All Homestay hosts are visited by the Homestay Co-ordinator. At this meeting the hosts are advised of the Homestay guidelines and hosts must meet strict requirements. A police check is also conducted. Students living in Homestay are also subject to guidelines, which are outlined in the Student Homestay Agreement.

How much does it cost?

  • Homestay accommodation costs A$235 per week.
  • Homestay Placement fee is A$185.

How can I make my payment?

Homestay payments can be made in person by credit or debit card. Please see your Homestay Co-Ordinator. Payments can also now be made online via the link below. A receipt for the payment will be sent to your email address. The Homestay Co-Ordinator will also receive this receipt.

Can you find me a Homestay within walking distance of the University?

It is unlikely that your Homestay Host will live within walking distance of the University. Our Homestay hosts live in nearby suburbs and most students travel by bus to the University. Homestays are usually within 30 minutes’ bus travel from the University.

Can someone pick me up at the airport?

The English Language Centre can arrange an airport pickup service if flight details are received at least a week before arrival. Sometimes you can be met by your Homestay host. This is free of charge.
