After students arrive, they may decide they want to live with friends in a rental property. In Launceston these properties are privately owned - not University owned. These places are sometimes in great demand and are not always easy to find. The Student Adviser may be able to advise students on how to find a share house.
Students must take care when being asked to sign a document to rent a house. A lease is a legal document and students should ask for advice before signing the document.
Share houses usually provide:
- one bedroom per student (some landlords allow students to share bedrooms, but this must be discussed with the landlord before the lease is signed).
- shared kitchen, bathroom and living areas.
- a stove but other items may need to be purchased.
Prices can range from approximately $AUD65 - $AUD125 per room for shared accommodation. House members share the cost of electricity and other services.
Landlords usually require a 'bond' to be paid before the moving in to the house. The bond should be returned by the landlord when moving out of the property unless there is damage to the property or unpaid rent.
