About The English Language Centre

Quality English programs are offered on both the Launceston and Hobart campuses of the University of Tasmania (UTAS).  UTAS is a research led university, with a high standard of teaching and a strong and increasing international focus.  The English Language Centre (ELC) commenced its English programs in 1989 and the Centres provide a variety of innovative English language programs including General and Academic English and direct entry programs to UTAS.   Over 4,000 international students studied at UTAS (including offshore) in 2008.

About our classes                     

  • Highly qualified, professional and experienced teachers
  • No more than 18 students in each class, an average of 15
  • Class level is decided by your teacher after a placement test at orientation
  • After 5 weeks study, students may move up to the next class based on an assessment
  • A variety of interesting afternoon option classes available
  • Opportunity for self study in our modern facilities
  • Reports are issued every 10 weeks and a Final Certificate is issued to students upon completion of the course
  • Part Time English is available for students at the Launceston campus. Students on a student visa cannot apply for this course.
