It is strongly recommended that candidates buy two books for the CELTA course: one grammar reference and one teaching methodology text. They will be necessary for incidental reference work and for completing at least two of the assignments. They should also be useful for completing the Pre-course Task.

- Practical English Usage (1980) by M. Swan. (Oxford UP)
- An A to Z of English Grammar and Usage by G. Leech. (Nelson)
- A Practical English Grammar by A.J. Thomson & A.V. Martinet. (Oxford UP)
- Grammar for English Language Teachers (2000) by M. Parrott. (Cambridge UP)
- Oxford Guide to English Grammar (1994) by J. Eastwood (Oxford UP)
Teaching Methodology Any of these books are suitable – just buy ONE:
- Learning Teaching: a guidebook for English language teachers (2005) by Jim Scrivener (Oxford: Macmillan)
- A Course in Language Teaching (1996) by Penny Ur (Cambridge University Press)
- How to Teach English (1998) by Jeremy Harmer (Longman)
