Information for New ELC Students - What to Bring

Travelling to another country to live and study can be an anxious but exciting time. It is important to know what to bring to Australia in order to make your journey and arrival in Australia more comfortable. We recommend the following checklist.
Travel Checklist
- Passport with valid visa.
- Airlines tickets and travel itinerary.
- Map of the campus, either Launceston or Hobart.
- Purchased Australian dollars for initial expenses and traveller's cheques.
- Letter of Offer and CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment).
- Certificates of previous study and/or certified copies of academic transcripts if you plan further study in Australia.
- IELTS results if you have taken a test within the last 2 years.
- Driver's licence (if you have one).
- Clothing: Comfortable, casual clothes and a warm jacket for winter. Tasmania experiences a range of weather - click for the current weather forecast.
- Equipment: Most accommodation (except homestay) will not include cooking equipment, blankets or towels. You can buy this equipment at a reasonable cost in Australia.
- Laptop computer, if you have one. Wireless networking is available on UTAS campuses.
- Spare pair of glasses or contact lenses if you wear them.
- Prescribed medication (it is a good idea to bring your prescription with you).
- Electricity in Australia is 240v 50 cycles AC. Adaptors are readily available in Tasmania.
- Camera, electronic dictionary, alarm clock, toiletries.

What Not to Bring
Warning: Do not accept bags or items from other people and agree to bring them into Australia. Harsh penalties apply for bringing illegal items into Australia.
Australia has strict quarantine laws and penalties or prosecution may apply if quarantine items are not declared. It is a good idea to seek detailed information from the Australian Customs website about what you cannot bring into Australia.
