Exchange for UTAS Students
What’s the difference between Study Abroad and Exchange?
Exchange: To be an Exchange Student you must study at one of our formal Partner Institutions - you can find a list of our formal Partner Institutions on our website.
UTAS has a formal exchange agreement with the universities listed on this site. As an Exchange Student you remain enrolled as a UTAS student so your tuition fees while on exchange can be deferred to your HECS debt.
Study Abroad: If you decide to study at a university that is not one of our Partner Institutions, you are a classed as a Study Abroad student. As a Study Abroad student, you will be required to pay tuition fees up front to your host institution. You will also be entirely responsible for organising your time abroad including liaising with your UTAS Faculty and your host institution.
I’m doing my Honours/Masters by Research/PhD. Can I go on exchange?
It is extremely hard to send students on exchange while they are completing a research based degree. If you are interested in completing part of your thesis abroad, we recommend you arrange to be a “Visiting Scholar” at your host institution. This should be negotiated through your Supervisor and your Faculty.
Do I have to speak the native language of my host institution?
Most UTAS Partner Institutions offer some units where the medium of instruction is English. A small number of host universities only offer units in the primary language of the country they are located in - minimum language requirements apply to students seeking entry to these institutions. Please refer to the list of formal Partner Institutions for more information.
I’m an International Student, can I still go on exchange?
International Students are eligible to undertake a Student Exchange with a formal UTAS Partner Institution in any country other than their home country. Also please check the requirements of your current visa and be aware that you may have extra requirements in obtaining a visa to the host country.
How early should I apply?
The application deadlines for Student Exchange are:
- 1st August for Semester 1 commencement in the following year
- 15th March for Semester 2 commencement in the same year
I want to travel when I go on exchange, should I go before or after study?
We recommend travelling after you have completed your studies. Sometimes planes may be delayed, missed or cancelled, and this could cause you to miss orientation or key enrolment dates at your host institution.
Will I still receive my Centrelink allowance while on exchange?
Yes! As you are still enrolled as a student at UTAS, you are still eligible to receive your Centrelink allowance. Prior to going on Student Exchange, you will need to obtain a letter from the Study Abroad & Exchange Coordinator to give to Centrelink informing them of your upcoming Student Exchange.
