Harmony Day 2011
ELC Launceston
This year, as part of the Launceston Harmony Day celebrations on Tuesday the 22nd March, four hundred local primary school children visited the Launceston Campus for a variety of afternoon events.
The ELC contribution to the day started by covering the glass frontage of the library with colourful signs expressing “welcome”, “Harmony Day”, and the slogan of the day, “everyone belongs”. These were written in the languages of the international student body as well as the languages of the local international community.
The schools prepared worksheets, based on the scripts and translations to give the children an awareness of language diversity in the world.
The Centre also hosted 120 of the school children on a “Trip around the world in thirty minutes”. Current and past ELC students from a variety of countries made themselves available for the two, thirty- minute sessions to answer questions about themselves and their countries. The children were given a passport on arrival which was stamped by every “country” they visited as they moved around the rooms.

The feedback from the international students reflected an appreciation at being able to practise English speaking and listening skills in a natural and fun way. They were also very pleased to be able to meet and learn from the local children. The primary school feedback was also very positive, with one teacher saying that she was amazed at how well the children had interacted with the International students. Hopefully the experience has fostered better understanding between the two groups involved, and that our International students and the local community have been brought a little closer.
